It was a cold winter evening in January, it was freezing and windy outside. We were sitting comfortably in our warm living-room drinking coffee and tea after a nice dinner with the family celebrating my sons 14 years birthday on the 7’th of January.
My son was in his room experimenting with his new digital camera. Suddenly he came running down from his room  very excited telling me that there were some strange light in the horizon. I told him it was probably lights from a ship. “No it’s not a ship”, he said and went back to his room. A few minutes later he came down again showing me a photo of the strange light on his camera. I was stunned, that was definitely not some light from a ship!
“I told you” he said smiling and excited over his discovery. We then spend the next two hours with our cameras and tripods photographing the phenomena.
But later that evening we couldn’t find anything on the news related to this phenomena. We then wrote a mail to the worlds leading astronomy magazine “Astronomy” and attached our images. They confirmed later that same evening that what we saw was the comet McNaught.
The “Astronomy” magazine later published our story and images in their following monthly issue. My son is so proud, I’m so proud. That was a birthday we will never forget.
My son later told me, that he now wishes a new digital camera with a bigger lens at his next birthday. Maybe that isn’t such a bad idea after all.....
