Saqqaq
Saqqaq

Saqqaq meaning the sunny side - small settlement in west Greenland located on the southern part of Nuussuaq Peninsula, 100 km north of the town of Ilulissat. Saqqaq is the only settlement in the beuatiful and huge Vaigat Strait and has 173 inhabitants.
Saqqaq was founded in 1755 and was originally named Ritenbenk, but later in 1781 moved further south together with the original name.

Saqqaq Culture

Many archeological findings in the settlement dates back to the Saqqaq Culture who lived in Greenland between 2500 BCE and 800 BCE. Some mummy’s from that time are on display in the National Museum in Nuuk.
