Welcome to Tasiilaq The biggest town in East Greenland with a population of 1.650 people. One of the most visited places in Greenland. Tourist arrive mostly via Iceland to see this beautiful spot on the east coast.
The town was founded in 1894 and named Angmassalik, but was renamed in 1997 to Tasiilaq.
It’s only been around 100 years ago since the first europeans visited the settlement for the first time. So the traditional hunting culture is still very common.
The town has a population of only 1.650 people. It has no airport, only a landing pad for helicopters. Tasiilaq has a couple of hotels and cabins for rent.
In the winter the area is known for it’s ‘piteraq’ hurricanes, caused by cold wind streaming down from the ice-cap through the valleys causing extreme high wind speeds.
